Keep in mind that the world of photography is very, very large and, with the fast paced advancement of digital technology, is growing as you read this page. So, don’t feel pressured to ‘learn it all’ before you begin. First of all, I’m a big fan of ‘non-formal’ photography. That’s my ‘fancy-smancy’ way of describing fun photography. After all, when most of us were first ‘bitten’ by the ‘photography passion,’ it was pure fun and enthusiasm. And, as long as we just keep shooting what we see without knowing the ‘rules’ and other sometimes limiting barriers, photography stays fun. It’s when we decide to ‘learn’ the rules and begin to make our photography work ‘fit’ the rules is the beginning of our discontent with our new found love of photography. What’s the solution? Keep it simple – learn the basics of photography first before you learn the ‘rules.’ The Basics of Photography – A Few LessonsAgain, keep in mind – learning the basics of photography is good to know. But, learning the basics and learning the rules shouldn’t kill your passion for photography. Basic Photography Tip 101Don’t confuse yourself by measuring your value as a photographer with the measuring standards of what sells or how much money is made. Don’t misunderstand me, I’m one of those photographers that doesn’t see anything wrong in making money with my photography. But, I’ve learned that when I don’t measure my skills and growth as a photographer in terms of how much I get paid, I enjoy photography more, I make more money and I don’t confuse myself! There is much more to great photography than what sells or how much a photographer makes. The two concepts are related, but they aren’t to be seen as one and the same! Once I learned that lesson, I stopped ‘pressuring’ myself and shot better work; I became better at knowing how to shoot for clients and shooting for my own enjoyment; and I actually make more money with my photography. Another reason that you shouldn’t measure the value of your photography based on how much money you make from it. The best selling photography isn’t always the best photography. The photos that I’ve sold that have made and continue to make me the most money aren’t what I consider ‘my best’ work – very, very good, but not ‘my best.’ But, the lesson that I eventually learned and want to share with you here is: there are photography basics and there are the basics of photography business. The two, although very important, are simply not the same. Learn that lesson and photography will always be fun to you.
