Boudoir Props

Boudoir props, when used imaginatively, can create a feeling, enhance a mood, and can be the difference between a great photograph and a so-so photograph. Boudoir props standards do not exist. There are no guidelines for props for boudoir – neither what to use or what not to use. Discussing with the model beforehand what type of photos you will be taking will give you and your model ideas of what props to use. Also, the discussion with the model can help the model bring her own accessories.

Of course, it helps if the photographer has a wide range of props and a well-equipped wardrobe. Not only will this allow greater freedom to accommodate a change in mood during the shoot, but it might also inspire your model to think of new ideas about how she would like to look.

In all good Boudoir Photography, model confidence is critical.

Boudoir Props – A Little of Everything

Think of props and accessories for boudoir photography as you would for the theater. Boudoir photography is about dressing and acting a part. If your model sees something that captures her imagination, it will be easier for her to act in front of the camera. My props and accessories collection includes an eclectic mix: fishing boots, oversized hats, sun glasses, sports items, mirrors (I really like mirrors – somehow mirrors help the shy models that I work with relax and pose confidently), wagon wheels, boxing gloves, candles, batons, silk sheets, cuffs, etc. Keep in mind, the props don’t make the shot – they enhance the shot, when used imaginatively. For the style of boudoir photography that I shoot, ‘less is more.’

Props and accessories are in the shoot for a purpose. Classic boudoir photography ‘is not’ a reflection of ‘real-life.’ For instance, it is unlikely that a woman would go swimming wearing a blouse. In boudoir photography, however, one of the classic shots is of a model emerging from the sea with a wet, sheer garment clinging to every one of her curves. Sun glasses hide the eyes, but they make a stunning point about nudity when they are the only thing your model is wearing. This is true of any accessory – scarves, shoes, stockings, for example – on an otherwise nude model.

Boudoir Props - Wardrobes and Clothing

Soft and luxurious fabrics, especially silks and furs, have instant sex appeal. So does leather and PVC, with it’s overtly fetish connotations. Having access to clothing is helpful. However, my experience has been that it is difficult to have the model pose comfortably when you and she know that you have to return the items in good condition – no makeup or sweat marks.

Often, models will have their own supply of clothes. Always discuss this with them beforehand. Usually, I have found, that the less experience a model has, the fewer the odds are that she will have the clothes needed. Lingerie, for example, should, at least, look expensive. Amateur models don’t have enough experience to be fully aware of the difference.

Boudoir Props – Lingerie

One of the staples of boudoir props is lingerie. Quality lingerie in multiple sizes is often hard to come by. WT is one of the best resources that I have found for imaginative lingerie. Their lingerie is only limited to your imagination. They offer lingerie in materials from sheer to leather to PVC. They offer lingerie sizes from petite ballerina to a 310 pound cons truction worker – this is not an exaggeration. Every garment is individually made per your order. The customer service is first-class. Best of all, they are discreet and dependable. If you have a need for sexy lingerie you must check them out. I highly recommend their products. My models literally love their products. You will find that they have what you can imagine, but, you cannot find anywhere – on or off the internet.

Boudoir props add a great deal to your photography and even more to your imagination and pleasure. Enjoy!

Just for kicks, what about typical boudoir photography? Is beauty predictable or is it as unlimited and expansive as our imaginations and that which arouses us?

Be creative with posing with lingerie. You can make your own or you can purchase high quality sexy lingerie online. Building confidence in your model is critical during the sessions. Sexy lingerie goes a long way toward building that confidence. Try it!
