Consider Starting A Digital Photography Business When You Start A Photography Business

When you do your research on how to start a photography business, consider starting a digital photography business. “Well – duh, of course” you’re probably saying! Digital photography is everywhere, isn’t it? But, it may not be as “obvious” as you think.

There are your photography basics to be included when starting a photography business of any type. And, with the advance of technology, there is the “digital photography business” – with all of it’s flux.

Digital Photography Business Differences:

  • ‘Almost’ mistake-proof automation (of course, the purists still are ‘convinced’ that digital technology will never surpass the quality of film – they also, probably still waiting for typewriters and eight-track tapes to make a comeback).
  • Leveling of the processing playing field – digital technology allows photographers to process their own images versus having to send them to professional labs for processing. Software for photographers allows this revolutionary change.
  • Digital photo editing is now in the hands of individual photographers as a result of the development of powerful and accessible digital photography editing software for photographers like Photoshop.
  • Digital photo editing has become a photography niche business that many people profit from when starting their photography business. Digital photo editing as a digital photography business niche simply did not exist until very recently. And, it's here to stay!
  • Photo restoration is now in the hands of individual photographers. This particular niche is becoming especially popular as a home based photography business. Digital photography businesses can receive and deliver their products/services online, without leaving their homes, anywhere in the world – after the costs of the software and, possibly, a good digital photo editing tutorial guide, to confidently learn the software – it’s ‘almost’ pure profit. What exploded this photography niche for me was my discovery of a great resource to teach me how to become extremely confident using Photoshop. Other photographers pay me to edit their photos. Niches like this did not exist before digital photography software and other technological advancements
  • Flexibility with digital technology makes starting a photography business much more practical, affordable and credible.

Some Of The Illusions And Challenges Of Starting A Digital Photography Business

There are a few challenges as a result of digital photography technology, also. For example, the technology allows everybody and their brother and their sister to have a digital camera and consider themselves photographers! The advancements have been so revolutionary that people are “taking pictures and making videos with their telephones that only commercial cameras were capable of just a few very short years ago.

One of the consequences of the easy availability and accessibility of digital photography technology is that ‘the people that take photos with their digital cameras and telephones think that anyone can start a photography business.

That illusion is another challenge introduced with the advancement of digital photography, people (wrongly) assume that there isn’t ‘much’ to starting a digital photography business. They forget (or never knew) that a photography business is just that – a business! People that take photos with their digital cameras and telephones are no more prepared to compete seriously in business than those of us that have kitchens in our homes are a threat to the restaurant industry!

In one sense, starting a successful photography business really doesn’t require ‘much.’ However, knowing what that much is' must be known by you for you to be successful and not just someone with a camera and some business cards that no one ever calls!
