How To Set Photography Prices

Indeed there are a lot of people who are currently engaging in the photography business and for a good reason too – it’s quite a lucrative trade, whether you’re acting alone or with an organization to back you up. And because of the growing market and provider population, skills in competition are essential for the budding business photographer who wishes to start their own photography business.

But the local setting will almost always have the same business. For example, many photographers would be into wedding photography or children photography. So where will competition get its edge? The answer is in pricing.

After examining the total cost of your business to determine your minimum price (don’t charge anything lower that would make you lose money instead of earning them), the best photography tip on pricing is to consider what you have to charge. Here are a couple of factors that the professional photographers base their charges on:

  1. Circulation. Remember that when you take picture for people they will be benefiting from the fact that these pictures are viewed. Of course, private individuals who want family pictures or other photos of private nature will have less views or circulation, but if you work for a newspaper or magazine publication you might have to consider how much these companies will be making use of your photo when they distribute their work with your photos in it. The same goes for advertising company or any other group that hosts a public event where your photos are involved.

  2. Size or prominence of the publication. In line with the factor of circulation it is also important to consider charging more for companies who can afford more simply because they will definitely earn more from your photos, and you should too. Consider the websites or other broadcast mediums that your photo will be involved in, regardless of its circulation. The number of people viewing your work is a separate thing from the different ways the client will use your work.

  3. Difficulty of the photo. This definitely goes, whether said or not. The more complex the photo would be would most likely mean more lighting equipment, more visual editing, or simply more complicated use of your skills in order to produce the pictures. Of course, the home photography business might cost less than the field photography for obvious reasons. Still, difficulty means cost.

Lastly, don’t forget to consider the pricing of other photographers in the area. You would need to strike a balance between a competitive price but at the same time maximize your profits. The real value of your photography is the key.
