Nude PhotographyLike beauty, erotica and nude photography, is in the eye of the beholder. I confess – I am definitely a ‘beholder!’ I love the beauty of women: their bodies, the exciting sensuousness of their nudity, the delicate curves that define them, their eyes, the voluptuousness of their lips, the rhythmic buoyancy of their breast, the vibration of their butt muscles and leg contours as they walk, the mystery of their sex – their intoxicating pleasure moments.
To me, the image of a nude woman, any woman, is more than nakedness and body type. It is all of her. Nude photography, when done right, captures the layers of many of the sensuous pleasures of women. This type of photography reveals to the world another of the multi-facets of femininity. Nude photography revitalizes our inspiration and our faith in the eternal feminine. Sensuous photography, of course, arouses us. When done with care, will intrigue, shock and sometimes startle. Fully and partly nude, in shadow and in light, all speaks to the senses. We each bring our own perspective to viewing erotica. Our personal perspectives are born of our individual experiences and background, from our experiences with desire, lust and the aura of beauty. Nude Photography is Like Fine ArtWhile not my most accomplished type of photography (stock photography is my favorite), for me, this type of photography is like painting fine art. Like fine art, it is better appreciated when you study the masters. In the case of nude photography, the masters are many – depending on style. As a photographer, I enjoy taking nude photography. For me, this niche presents many technical challenges, lighting and shadows being the most critical areas for me. In most of my other photography styles, I master lighting and shadows very well. However, with fine art photography, there are no visual accessories (clothing, etc.) to diffuse unbalanced shots. Most of the times, the models/subjects are very pleased with the results. Those that aren’t usually are too critical on themselves. When I critique the same portraits, I may be impressed with the beauty of the nude woman. But, when I apply objective and critical honesty in my self-evaluation, I see how I could have lit areas better. Of course, I correct lighting imbalances on my computer. I just like to ‘get’ it right with the camera’s eye. Nude Photography is One of the Most Popular Types of PhotographyNude portrait photography is one of the most popular types of photography - among amateur and professional alike. Amateurs are sometimes driven by lust disguised as budding talent. Working with an experienced model is extremely helpful when starting out. Experienced models need very little instructions or directions. They use their experience for their poses. I like to work fast. So, when I am shooting an experienced model I have pre-set lighting configurations that I experiment with. When I am shooting non professional models relaxing them is the most critical step. One of the first things that I mention to a client is tell them to bring someone with them to help them to feel more comfortable. Often, merely mentioning this brings a sense of relief to the potential client. They seem to appreciate that I am aware of and considerate of their comfort level. For my sessions, a relaxed model is usually a confident model. And confidence is sexy. Non-professional models, sometimes, need direction, staging, encouragement and suggestions. I ask them what poses they had in mind. I then ask if they have done nude photography before. Most will say no. However, before they answer whether or not they have, I quickly add the question of what did they like/unlike about the last time they were photographed. My experience has been that many women have nude photographs of themselves – usually snapshots or Polaroids. If they begin to feel more comfortable with me, they pull out and show me the snapshots. I then quickly ask them what about the picture did they want to make sure was captured this time. This offers them an opportunity to tell me what results they are looking for. This helps me to determine the poses. From there, the session goes very smoothly. Women want to take nude portrait photography for different reasons. Often, it is to visually document a period in their lives (as measured by the suppleness and the relative firmness of their bodies). Some regret not taking portraits when they were younger. However, they realize by taking them now prevents even more regrets later. The desire to have a nude portrait done is a self-congratulatory and reaffirming act the more women need to do for themselves. They don’t necessarily need nude photography to reaffirm themselves. But, women want to feel beautiful. Portraits make statements of self-affirmation. One of the best methods of learning techniques for quality nude photography is to study the masters. There are many. We will list many of the masters in the near future. Studying those referred to as masters offers a lot of valuable pointers that cannot be easily gained elsewhere. Behold the beauty of women! Quality nude portrait photography begins with trust. The client has to trust the photographer to make them look sexy, desirable, forever young and feminine. All women are beautiful. Nude Photography under the directions of a good photographer builds trust, relaxes the client and draws out the confidence. I don’t think I will ever get tired of the sight of women in their glorious nudity and the language of their eroticism. To me, their bodies are fascinating, tantalizing, seductive, daring, mysterious and desirable. I only hope that I can adequately capture and display their beauty in the manner deserved. Like the beauty of flowers, nude women need the proper environment to reach the height of their beauty. Nude Photography Masters’ List
