What is a Photography Niche? Niche: nich, noun – A situation or activity specifically suited to a person’s interests, desires, abilities, or nature: ex. Found her niche in life. Also, niche: A special area of demand for a product or service. Let’s be clear. A good photographer has a lot of knowledge about generalized photography. When practicing photography, photographers should shoot a lot of different and varied subjects. However, when it comes to building and maintaining a successful photography business, focusing on a photography niche is critical for success. Of course, most photographers have many different images of many subjects in their collections. Successful photographers know their niche and target their marketing efforts, activities and resources to a specific audience (a small but specialized customer base seeking your services). Being focused on a specific niche is critical for success in the stock photography market. List the photography markets and specializations that you want to serve as a successful photographer. Use the information below to categorize various photography markets. The entire photographers’ market is simply enormous. Photographers involved range from hobbyists to occasional part-timers freelancing to the ‘superstar’ photographers who command fees of $15,000 a day. And, in between are literally thousands of photographers competing in almost every niche imaginable. In such an enormous playing field there has to be a niche for every focused and committed, hard-working and competent photographer. But the question is – where? At the most basic level the business of photography falls into two very broad categories: - assignment photography and
- stock photography
| Architectural Photographer – Generally speaking, photographers who specialize in architecture focus entirely on this discipline, which is largely due to intense, personal interest in architecture. The work of the photographer requires precision and at least a moderate understanding of the principles and styles of architectural design. A passion for architecture is essential! | Boudoir Photography - To many, boudoir photography is considered the art of visually capturing beautiful, sensuous and sexy photos of regular women. | Event Photographer - The challenges for an event photographer are basic. In this niche the photographer must be successful at getting the word out about who we are, at what we do and why we’re better than the ‘other’ photographer. | | Family Photography - Traditional families have changed and so have their expectations in family photography. There are families of three, families of sixty with three generations, extended families, ethnic families, single-parent families, and the list goes on. | Fashion Photography - Fashion photography is the glamour occupation of the profession. It is highly competitive and pays very well. The main market is advertising, but there are also editorial opportunities. | Freelance Photography - Although I strongly encourage focusing on your photography niche, to achieve the most success in selling your photography and getting new customers, freelance photography is still a strong attraction for many that enjoy taking all types of pictures. | | Nature/Wildlife Photography - Nature Wildlife Photography is a favorite specialization for photographers who are nature lovers, and there is a big editorial and advertising market for the subject matter. Nature magazines, travel magazines, wildlife picture books, calendars, textbooks, and reference books all come to mind. | Nude Photography - In my opinion, the image of a nude woman, any woman, is more than nakedness and body type. It is all of her. Nude photography, when done right, captures the layers of many of the sensuous pleasures of women. | Pet Photography - Pet Photography is another specialized business that is great fun for those who love animals and photography. It is an ideal sideline for the retail photographer who enjoys working with pets. Some photographers specialize in going from pet show to pet show. | | Portrait Photography - A good portrait reveals some aspect of the subject’s character, whether it’s a mood, a hint of laughter, or some other aspect of their personality. The skill to revealing this is in how you, the photographer, relate to and with the subject. | Stock Photography - Stock Photography is photography shot on speculation, in advance of being sold. The Stock Photography niche and market has experienced major changes. The results have changed the stock photography business tremendously - for the good! | Photoshop Skills as a photography niche - one of the greatest niche in demand today! Studio Photographer - For you, as a studio photographer, clients form an opinion of your studio before they even step into your studio. | | Travel Photography - Travel photography is a favorite field for photographers who love to travel the world. Any photography that promotes travel through either an editorial piece or advertising can be considered part of this type of photography. An important element of this field of photography is an ability to shoot candids of people. | Wedding Photography - For creative wedding photographers, business is booming. Weddings are a billion dollar industry and wedding photography can be a very lucrative career. To be good, you have to work very hard. The rewards are very good. But, the work is very hard. For many photographers “wedding photography” is not worth the hassle and a lot of photographers will not shoot weddings for love nor money. For others weddings are all there is. | UrbanPhotography Art Discover exciting and inspiring urban photography art. This site is not just about the photographs but also the photographersbehind them. Take a look at the sharp photography of Sander Martijn - a photographer with a very good eye. In my opinion, portraits would be an appropriate niche. |
Assignment Photography NicheAssignment Photography is photography commissioned by a client. Assignment photography can be thought of as custom photography, done to meet client’s unique needs. Advertising of specific products, executive por traits, weddings and other special functions, sports events, school photography, and many other photos are shot on assignment. Most photographers will spend their entire career shooting on assignment. An at tractive aspect of assignment photography is that there is little to no upfront financial risks for the photographer. No money is spent by the photographer until an agreement is signed. Stock Photography NicheStock Photography is photography shot on speculation, in advance of being sold. Stock photography began as an outlet for the hundreds of thousands of photographs taken on assignment. Eventually, a market developed and flourished that had photo marketers forming stock agencies to market a wide selection of generic photographs. Having the images available as stock gives clients a lower cost (but evenly priced) option. It gives consumers a high-quality visual experience that they might otherwise miss. And, best of all, it gives the photographer the opportunity to earn income from photographs that otherwise would stay in a drawer or on a hard drive forever. Everybody wins! As the business of stock photography grew explosively, supply was steadily outpacing demand, and the field became even more competitive. Stock photography quality has risen, and shooting specifically for stock has replaced the concept of using the stock agency as a place for surplus photographs. Many photographers spend part of their time shooting specifically for stock, taking advantage of the opportunities provided by being on location for an assignment. Other photographers specialize exclusively in shooting for stock. Stock photography can be a lucrative market for photographers, but given its competitive nature some rules to assist you in attaining success are worth keeping in mind: - Your photographs have to stand out from the masses of photographs in the stock photography niche files. Unusual locations, stunning composition, and a sufficiently generic, undated image go a long way to ensuring repeated success.
- The more images you have on file the greater your chances of success.
- Your ability to constantly refresh your stock images is critically significant. In fact, stock agencies worth their salt will insist on it.
It is not unusual for photographers with reasonably well developed stock photography niche portfolios to generate thousands of dollars from the resale of a single image. Quite a few images have generated tens of thousands of dollars in resales over the years. It is much less risky to build a stock portfolio part time alongside an assignment practice, expanding more heavily into stock as you gain experience and become known.
