Photography Portfolio Steps

Whether you are doing wedding photography or specialize in children photography, nothing gives budding photographer a good head start than keeping a portfolio in hand. A well set portfolio will determine the difference between a convinced and discouraged client to any photographer, whether new or experienced.

What’s so important about taking care of your portfolio is that it is not a one time asset. It continues to represent you as you go on with your trade whether it’s a field or home photography business. So there is no better time to build a portfolio than when you are starting a photography business.

But a portfolio is more than just a collection of your past work; it is both an art and a responsibility. As such, you might want to consider the following photography tips on building a portfolio.

  1. Select your best work. Don’t just put in anything that you’ve aimed your camera at. Some shots, especially the worse kinds, are better off left unexposed. What you want to do with your portfolio is to build it in a way that it shows how much you are capable of, and this will look better without your photo fiascos.

  2. Get a second opinion. Try to find someone who can review your portfolio. Remember that this portfolio is not meant for you, it is meant for your clients to see, so you need to make sure if it looks good in the eyes of someone other than yourself. Try to listen to their advice and insights and consolidate them with your own.

  3. Customize. Don’t forget to keep in mind the purpose of your portfolio and your business as a whole. If you specialize in various fields of photography, then try to segregate the photos that you think would be fitting examples for weddings from those of animal photography. Just organize your photos for the convenience of your clients.

  4. Add your own touch. Make your portfolio unique to yours and fun to use so that people will know your portfolio when they see it. Try to present the photos in a way that they highlight your best skills.

  5. Use different media. Some people want to read scrap book portfolios, while some like to view them online or load them on a CD. Prepare the most common formats for a portfolio so you can be ready anytime you need that particular format.

A portfolio is what documents what you have been able to accomplish as a photographer since you started, and that is what’s going to make people believe that you are indeed worth consulting. So make one and take care of it.
