30 Minute Web Presence” Tutorial Guide

Welcome to the “Best Amateur Photography Tips Digest” Bonus Page. On this page, you will find the “30 Minute Web Presence” tutorial steps. This is a step-by-step guide for establishing a web presence on Squidoo in less than 30 minutes. This is a “Best Amateur Photography Tips Digest” lesson.

Establishing your web presence is a lot like learning to ‘swim’ (and other new and scary concepts in life): you can study all of the information (books, workshops, tapes, DVDs, blogs, etc.) available – but, sooner or later, you have to ‘jump in the pool!’

This guide is set up to help you to ‘jump in the pool,’ and ‘get your feet wet,’ so to speak. Once you’re ‘in,’ you’ll find out that “the water feels just fine” and it really wasn’t that difficult. In fact, once you’re ‘in,’ you’ll probably ask yourself “why didn’t somebody tell me that it was this easy?

The “30 Minute Web Presence” Tutorial Guide – Let’s Jump! (don’t be scared!)
In order to begin, there are a couple of things that you need to do beforehand because you will be asked to answer a few questions and upload photos of your choice. For the purpose of this lesson example, I’m setting up a photography related web page, so I will use photos. However, this “30 Minute Web Presence” tutorial guide works just as well for any subject or topic. Remember this small point, however – people like pictures no matter what the subject matter is.

So, gather up the photos you want to use on your site.
Next, answer these questions – you will be asked for this type of info:

  1. What is the site that you’re building about? (my example: photography model portfolio)
  2. What do you want to do with your newly built website? (ex. display quality photos of a young woman model and provide her promotion details and info)
  3. What do you want the title of your site to be? (ex. my title will include the words “model portfolio” – the next question will ask you for keywords, which are words to help your site to be found on the internet)
  4. What other keywords (tags) do you want people to use to find you? (ex. model portfolio, gallery, etc. – come up with 3, you can add more later)

The purpose of this guide is to assist you to establish your web presence immediately. However, although this will be very quick and very easy, you will not have just ‘thrown up’ a web page. No, you’ve already given a thoughtful structure to your site (by responding to the four questions above). But, ‘first things first' – let’s see if all of this ‘get your feet wet’ stuff works. (By the way, it's too soon for this now, but, your web page will actually be 'search engine ready' - that's how you will be found - 85% of all existing website owners have not given as much thought as you have [by responding to the above questions] to the purposes of their websites.)

Once you have the above listed photos selected and questions answered, go to this link at Squidoo: Click Here (special note: you also can make a few bucks from having a lens (webpage) at Squidoo – in just under two years I’ve made $9.89 total! And I haven’t received that, yet). Anyway, Click Here to get started establishing your web presence. Once there, this is how it will go:

The link will take you to the Step 1 of the Squidoo lens building process. You will be asked “what your lens is about” – you will then put in your response to question #1 above.

Next is Step 2 where you’re asked “What do you want to do with your lens?” You’ll have a selection, choose: “I just want to do my own thing. ”

Step 3 will ask you the title and name of your website (it will be referred to as URL). Here you will use your keywords. In my photography page example I made sure to put “model portfolio” either as the title or somewhere in the title. It can be all one word; separated by lower bars; separated by a hyphen; or a combination of all of them. In Step 3 you will also be asked to select a “category” for your site. For my example, I selected “entertainment.” And, finally, Step 3 asks you the “rating” of your site – i.e. G, R, X.

Step 4 tells you to “Help people find your lens.” You will do this by entering more keywords (people will find your site on search engines by typing in the keywords that you just used for Step 3). Don’t get stuck on this. If you can’t think of three keywords, just repeat keywords. You can always come back later and enter the keywords. In fact, what will happen when you build your page and later edit it, is that there will be a bunch of keywords related to the keyword that you entered suggested to you by Squidoo. All you will have to do is click on the words that you want to include. It couldn’t be easier choosing keywords. Finally, Step 4 will ask you to enter the ‘security’ word on the lower left hand side. Do so and click on “done.” That’s it! You’ve actually built your page framework – the most important part, so far.

Now, on the next page you will be able to write a little content about your site; to upload your photos; and to publish your website.

Before you do anything – click on the “Add Modules” button. At the next page:
Click on the “add” button for the “Guestbook” module. Then click on the “add” button for the “Text/Write” module. Click on “save.”

Edit your modules by telling a “little” more about the subject of your site. (I emphasize “little” because many web publishers tell far too much in this section, in my opinion. Besides, you can write all that you want in your “Text/Write” modules, later on.) Your “Guestbook” module will ask you: 1.) who do you want commenting? – select “anyone;” 2.) When should their blurbs be approved? – select “right away;” 3.) Show how many blurbs per page? – the choice is yours, here; 4.) Show commenter photos (thumbnails)? – select “yep;” 5.) Strip all HTML out of blurbs? – select “nope.” Click “save.”

Edit your Text/Write module in the same manner. By this time, you will know how easy the Squidoo tools are to use.

Be sure to save your edits and changes every time. Click on publish.

You will be asked whether you want to “view your page” or “go back, keep editing.” On this page, you’ll have a selection of things that you can now do with your newly built site. Skip those and click on “view your page.”

Congratulations – you’re in the pool.

I've provided a link to the example page at Squidoo that I have built using the info and steps provided to you in this lesson. Click here to see my example page. You can either use your imagination and create your site using the example for creative inspiration. Or, you can follow the steps to the letter (being sure that you've thought about answers to the four questions). Either way, you'll have a very credible web presence. Click here to view the example site.

What I’ve done with the site is to add “Text/Write” modules, which you can do. You can add whatever type modules that you choose.

Look at this example website and use your imagination to establish your web presence. As you can see, it is very, very doable. For example, if you’re a photographer, do you think that the models, high-school seniors, athletes, etc. would appreciate you building them a “page?” Of course, they will – and it won’t cost you any money!

Stick with your newly built site for, at least, three weeks. Commit to return regularly and freshen it up. Even if you commit to 3 minutes per week – spend the 3 minutes doing basic things to freshen your site up. Doing so will improve your search engine rankings. Most significantly, your web presence is established; you now know how to do it again about any subject or topic that you choose; and your confidence will explode. I promise.

 Sidebars & Other Qestions

O.K., After I ‘Jump’ In The Pool – Then What?
After you’ve built the site, you can leave it as it is or you can return and improve and refresh it – either way! Squidoo websites, like all websites, will get better search engine rankings when they’re refreshed consistently. However, this lesson is about establishing your web presence. Once you have crossed that barrier, your confidence in web building will literally explode! I promise. Right now, we want to help you to ‘jump in the pool.’ Other tips and lessons will help you to grow your website, your web presence and your website building and managing confidence and skills.

Squidoo is a very easy and friendly service to use. Also, they are always making it easier to use their site. By the way, building your website won’t cost you a dime! I can’t ‘really’ say that it’s free because you must spend 30 minutes of your valuable time. But, I can assure you that this won’t cost you any money and if you ‘stick with it’ for, at least 3 – 4 weeks, I promise you that you will be ready for the next level of your web presence.

Please keep in mind, that most of the lessons and assistance to establishing a successful and profitable web presence are free. Don’t let (the word) ‘free’ fool you. On the internet, ‘FREE’ has value.

Many vendors are so confident in the products and services that they sell, the good ones give you full versions of their products and services for ‘free.’ This business tactic is called a “marketing strategy.” This marketing strategy puts the product/service in the hands of customers who are interested in the products but, want to know (if the products ‘really and truly’ benefits them, specifically – without the hype) and ‘try’ before they ‘buy.’

This is a win-win situation: the vendor has their product in the hands of a warm potential customer. And the potential customer can ‘test-drive’ the product/service before buying – or, better yet, most of the free full versions have no time limits – you end up with very useful, powerful and profitable tools. If and when you make money with them you can always purchase them later. But, you don’t have to – trust me, most of the free full versions of products and services available will expand your online knowledge and skills sets tenfold!

In order to fund this site and this project, we do promote all vendors’ products with an affiliate link to our site. Although we endorse those products/services, we do so because they have consistently proven beneficial and profitable to us. If you decide to buy – thank you, very, very much! However, first determine what it is that you want the product/service to do for you; second, try the product/service and make sure that it consistently does specifically what it claims that it does; finally, once again, ask yourself, “does this work for me and does it make my life better?” To learn more about how you can benefit from ‘affiliate marketing’ – click here to learn more.
