Photography Website Considerations

  1. Website Purpose
  2. Website Must Fit Your Style
  3. Automation & Technology
  4. Costs

Tip #1

Website Purpose: Determine what is the primary goal of your website:

  • to display your work
  • to advertise your services
  • to market yourself and your photography
  • to sell, etc.

Believe it or not, websites are not advertising tools – they are sales closing tools. Your website should be designed and used to assist you in getting and closing of a sale.

Website Image: Your website should reflect the same high-quality, professionalism of your other literature and your photography services. Don’t just ‘throw up’ a website just to say that you have a website. Determine which website creation option is best for you. You can build your own website ( trust me, building first-class, photography websites is currently easier than ever. Of course, you can have your website built by a website designer. Building your website yourself will take you much longer. But, you will be surprised how easy it is and how fast you will learn about websites.

Tip #2

Display your work:

  • Galleries: Photography websites provide the perfect settings for online photography galleries. If you are a wedding photographer and potential customers want to see samples of your work – they can visit your website gallery. Likewise with portraits, seniors’ photography, sports photography, events photography or even nude photography – galleries dramatically expand and increase your exposure 24 hrs. a day, 7 days a week.
  • Portfolios: Such websites offer almost unlimited opportunities for photographers to display their portfolios. Whether your photography niche is family portraits, stock photography, wedding photography, boudoir photography, etc., creating and publishing a first-rate online portfolio is very doable. Photographers that do not have their portfolios online are simply losing out.
  • Online Stock Libraries: You can send photobuyers emails with links to your libraries. (Of course, you will only send emails after you have done the research of what types of photographs to send and to whom to send them.
  • Private Viewing: Your customers can access your website photo gallery. You can simply send them an email that contains the photo gallery link and a secret password for the accessing of private portrait reviews (i.e. family portraits, boudoir and glamour portraits, etc.)

Tip #3

Contact Information:

  • Who Are You?
  • What Are Your Qualifications? How many years experience? What photography related education do you have?
  • Where Are You Located? What state, county, city, etc.
  • How Can I Contact You? Telephone number; FAX number; email address (and email link)
  • What Times Can I Contact You?
  • What Photography Services Do You Provide and How Can You Make Me Look Good?

Tip #4

Photography Sales

  • Portrait Photography
  • Stock Photography
  • Event Photography
  • Freelance Photography

A Photographer building their own photography websites is now very doable and a necessary tool to successfully market and promote your photography.
