Portrait Photography Tips
One of my favorite photography niches is portrait photography – almost all types of portrait photography (glamour, executive, headshot, family, promotion, etc.). I especially enjoy taking portraits of ‘regular’ people. Bringing out their attractiveness intrigues me and brings out the best in me when shooting. I find many women to be sensitive about being photographed. But, I’ve found that the same ‘over-sensitive’ women actuallyenjoy being photographed. Relaxing them and reassuring them that my only job is making them look good reduces their anxiety levels. I’ve found that the ‘shyest’ of models really stretch once they are clear on what is expected and confident that the photographer is truly interested in only bringing out the best. Upon request, I’ll include a ‘background’ in a portrait. But, as a rule, I prefer that the image just include the subject. Part of my intent is to focus all the viewers’ attention on the subject in the photograph. Although I’ve read that a photographer should not always have the subject looking directly into the lens, I do so in almost every portrait that I take. I also vary perspectives of the portraits by slightly changing angles. I’ve found that the angle thatI use the most is shooting down on the subject from an elevated position. One of my biggest lessons learned is to use a tripod for the best chance on getting clear and focused shots. This is a ‘sampling’ of a few of my portrait photo habits.
